“…The HspA 2 also acts as a hyaluronic acid (HA) receptor during normal fertilisation (Huszar et al ., ; Parmegiani et al ., ). It has been shown that HA‐bound spermatozoa have increased developmental maturity, increased chromatin integrity, increased morphology, increased functional competence (Keel et al ., ), decreased aneuploidy and decreased active caspase‐3 (Cayli et al ., ; Jakab et al ., ; Worrilow et al ., ). This protein localised in several organs, including the spermatozoa's surface (Ghosh & Datta, ; Ghosh et al ., ).…”

“…In a multicentre clinical trial of Worrilow et al . (), it was demonstrated that when patients with <65% binding efficiency are pre‐screened and HA‐bound spermatozoa is selected for ICSI, their success rates and implantation rates were slightly higher. However, a significant reduction in pregnancy loss was seen by them for the HA group, 3.3% versus 15.1% for the conventional ICSI group ( P = 0.021).…”

“…The head of motile mature spermatozoa presenting sufficient numbers of PH20 or HA receptors firmly binds to the solid state HA without showing forward motion of the head whereas freely moving spermatozoa are immature or defective with insufficient HA receptors. Literature studies on the PICSI procedure are mainly related to oral and poster presentations, which suggest that the PICSI procedure improves fertilization, implantation and pregnancy rates (Sanchez et al, 2005;Janssens et al, 2006;Worrilow et al, 2009). In these studies, clinical pregnancy was significantly improved when the PICSI procedure was implemented in the cases with low HA-binding ability.…”
