A Monte Carlo Evaluation of the Stock Synthesis Assessment Program

Abstract: Stock assessments for many U.S. Pacific coast groundfish stocks are developed using the catch at age method known as Stock Synthesis. The Stock Synthesis computer program attempts to reconstruct the demographic history of a stock from observed changes in fish age or size distributions, coupled with auxiliary information such as an index of stock biomass developed from a research survey or an index of fishing mortality based on fishing effort. In this study Monte Carlo simulation techniques were used to generat… Show more

“…In a previous investigation of the performance of Stock Synthesis (Sampson and Yin 1998), we conducted a similar but smaller experiment based on a one-eighth fraction of a 2 8 factorial design with 200 random data sets for each experimental treatment. The extra factor in our new experiment was the catch data variability (CatCV).…”

“…The specifications for the extent of estimation error are intended to cover the anticipated range. The values on which the analyses are based encompass the estimates of estimation error for the types of stock assessment methods on which management decisions for the groundfish species off the U.S. West Coast are based (Bence et al, 1993;Sampson and Yin, 1998;Yin and Sampson, 2004). The results explore the equilibrium properties of the nine management strategies and the behavior of these management strategies in the face of stochasticity.…”

“…It should, of course, be recalled that only limited testing of age-based stock assessment methods based on the 'Integrated Analysis' paradigm has been conducted (Bence et al, 1993;National Research Council, 1998;Sampson and Yin, 1998;Punt et al, 2001), even though this paradigm forms the basis for the bulk of the quantitative stock assessments in Australia, South Africa and off the west coast of North America.…”
