Maintenance has a key impact on the efficiency of the production processes because the efficiency of the machines determines the ability of the system to produce in accordance with the assumed schedule. The key element of the system performance assessment remains the availability of technological equipment, which directly translates into the efficiency and effectiveness of the performed production tasks. Taking into account the dynamic nature of manufacturing processes, the proper selection of machinery and equipment for the implementation of specific production tasks becomes an issue of particular importance. The purpose of this research was to determine the impact of technical and non-technical factors on the material selection of machine tools for production tasks and to develop a method of supporting the selection of production resources using the AHP and Fuzzy AHP methods. The research was carried out in a manufacturing company from the automotive industry.

PurposeThis paper presents a concept for digitalised maintenance (DM), maps the conceptualised DM to maintenance problems in industries and highlights challenges that might be faced when realizing this concept.Design/methodology/approachFirst, maintenance problems that are faced by the industry are presented, followed by a conceptualisation of DM. Next, a typical operational scenario is used as an exemplification to show system dynamics. The characteristics of this conceptualised DM are then mapped to the identified maintenance problems of industry. Then, interesting initiatives in this domain are highlighted, and finally, the challenges to realize this approach are discussed.FindingsThis paper identified a set of problems related to maintenance in industry. In order to solve current industrial problems, exploit emerging digital technologies and elevate future industries, it will be necessary to develop new maintenance approaches. The mapping between the criteria of DM and maintenance problems shows the potential of this concept and gives a reason to examine it empirically in future work.Originality/valueThis paper aims to help maintenance professionals from both academia and industry to understand and reflect on the problems related to maintenance, as well as to comprehend the requirements of a digitalised maintenance and challenges that may arise.

In production facilities, uninterrupted operations depend on the equipment's ability to perform without any problem. Therefore, maintenance activities are an issue that must be managed within the goals of production companies. Effective management of equipment maintenance directly affects operating performance. On the other hand, maintenance operations involve costly activities. The cost dimension is a critical consideration about maintenance unless the cost-benefit analysis is done correctly by the enterprises. However, there could be more costly situations when the problems are revealed by inadequate maintenance. In this study, total maintenance costs were examined to manage equipment maintenance. The maintenance activities of a company were analyzed the total maintenance costs model was applied.
