A microleakage study of ceramic laminate veneers by autoradiography: effect of incisal edge preparation

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the microleakage characteristics of laminate veneers with different incisal edge preparation. Two groups of 20 extracted human maxillary central incisors were used for fabricating laminate veneers. The cervical margin of all veneers were placed 1 mm above the cementoenamel junction. The incisal finish line of 20 teeth was placed at the incisal edge (window type preparation). The incisal finish line of the other 20 teeth was placed linguoincisally (incisal edge overlapp… Show more

“…For an aesthetic restoration as laminate veneers, microleakage is considered as a direct failure requiring remake of the restoration. 33 Location of the margin, 50,51 polymerization method and type of adhesive resin, 52 and type of finish line and preparation design 53 are factors that must be considered in order to reduce microleakage under porcelain veneers.…”

“…Ideally, the adhesive would allow restorative material bio-integration and provide strong and durable bonds that would seal the tooth-restoration interface, preventing microleakage and the subsequent ingress of microorganisms. 8,9 The introduction of a new generation of bonding systems and contemporary adhesive cements generates hope that such bonds to the tooth structure as well as the indirect restorations can now be obtained. 10 Self-adhesive resin cements were recently developed, with the rationale of simplifying the cementation procedure by eliminating the pretreatment step involving the tooth structure.…”

“…According to some professional opinions there are generally two techniques for localization of the incisal finish line during the veneers preparation procedure [69]. The first way leaves the lingual surface unprepared, that is window or intraenamel preparation, obtained when the facial surface is finished at the incisal edge.…”
