A method to support search string building in systematic literature reviews through visual text mining

Abstract: Despite the increasing popularity of systematic literature reviews in Software Engineering, several researchers still indicate it as a costly and challenging process. Aiming at alleviating this costly process, we propose an iterative method to support the process of building the search string for a systematic review. This method uses Visual Text Mining techniques to support the researcher by suggesting new terms for the string. In order to do so, the method extracts relevant terms from studies selected by the … Show more

“…However, less interest has been given on the preparation stage, and particularly in the task of building a convenient string that allows to retrieve as many results as possible related to the topic of interest. Even though different studies show that many researches find difficulties when constructing the search string [4], this task has mainly been left to the knowledge and judgment of the researchers conducting the review.…”

“…Although presented here as distinct applications, these applications could be used in combination and iteratively during search term development, or perhaps to analyse subcomponents of a search. They could also potentially be used on a set of screened records, either as quality assurance or as part of an integrated searching and screening system …”
