“…In fact, although their focus was primarily on producing CO 2 , the process that Lewis and Gilliland proposed is now referred to as chemical looping combustion . The concept of thermally splitting water in hydrogen and oxygen by means of a two-step chemical looping process can be traced back at least to 1966, when Funk and Reinstrom made a thermodynamic study on the decomposition of water for hydrogen production .
