Context: We are strong advocates of evidence-based software engineering (EBSE) in general and systematic literature reviews (SLRs) in particular. We believe it is essential that the SLR methodology is used constructively to support software engineering research.Objective: This study aims to assess the value of mapping studies which are a form of SLR that aims to identify and categorise the available research on a broad software engineering topic.Method: We used a multi-case, participant observer case study using five examples of studies that were based on preceding mapping studies. We also validated our results by contacting two other researchers who had undertaken studies based on preceding mapping studies and by assessing review comments related to our follow-on studies.Results: Our original case study identified eleven unique benefits that can accrue from basing research on a preceding mapping study of which only two were case specific. We also identified nine problems associated with using preceding mapping studies of which two were case specific. These results were consistent with the information obtained from the validation activities. We did not find an example of an independent research group making use of a mapping study produced by other researchers.Conclusions: Mapping studies can save time and effort for researchers and provide baselines to assist new research efforts. However, they must be of high quality in terms of completeness and rigour if they are to be a reliable basis for follow-on research.

Industry 4.0 is a vision of manufacturing in which smart, interconnected production systems optimize the complete value-added chain to reduce cost and time-to-market. At the core of Industry 4.0 is the smart factory of the future, whose successful deployment requires solving challenges from many domains. Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) is a key enabler for such complex systems of systems as can be seen by the increased number of related publications in key conferences and journals. This paper aims to characterize the state of the art of MBSE for the smart factory through a systematic mapping study on this topic. Adopting a detailed search strategy, 1466 papers were initially identified. Of these, 222 papers were selected and categorized using a particular classification scheme. Hence, we present the concerns addressed by the modeling community for Industry 4.0, how these are investigated, where these are published, and by whom. The resulting research landscape can help to understand, guide, and compare research in this field. In particular, this report identifies the Industry 4.0 challenges addressed by the modeling community, but also the challenges that seem to be less investigated.

Abstract. This paper aims to perform a survey of the scientific work carried out in the last 15 years in the area of Affective Computing in the context of Computers in Education. For this, a systematic mapping was carried out in the main scientific databases of the area in Brazil, being the SBIE, WIE and RBIE, which are events and journal of CEIE. Based on six research objectives, 53 articles were selected. After being analyzed, according to previously defined inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 24 articles were selected. From these, the data was mined, aiming to answer the research questions of this work. As a result, the current state of art in Affective Computing was presented. In addition, it was presented the Affective Socio-Dimensions taken into consideration in the selected papers, a map containing the types of studies and the research objectives and, finally, the presentation of the main authors and research groups in the area of Affective Computing in Brazil.Resumo. Este artigo tem como objetivo realizar um levantamento dos trabalhos científicos brasileiros, realizados nos últimos 15 anos, na área da Computação Afetiva no contexto de Informática na Educação. Para isso, foi realizado um mapeamento sistemático nos principais veículos brasileiros de divulgação científica na área, sendo eles o SBIE, WIE e a RBIE, veículos mantidos pela Comissão Especial de Informática na Educação da SBC. Inicialmente, foram coletados 53 artigos, dos quais 24 foram selecionados para análise. Como resultado, foi apresentado o atual estado da arte em Computação Afetiva em relação aos estados afetivos e outros fenômenos socioafetivos levados em considerações nos trabalhos. Também foram desenvolvidos um mapa contendo os tipos de estudos e os objetivos de pesquisa e uma apresentação dos principais autores e grupos de pesquisas na área da Computação Afetiva aplicada à Educação no Brasil.
