A load measuring anchor plate for rock bolt using fiber optic sensor

Abstract: Rock bolts are the devices that used to reinforce the rock masses in mining tunnels and underground excavation structures. The loading level of the rock bolt indicates the reinforcing efficiency and is able to ensure safe underground operation by giving warnings to the underground miners prior to any accidents. Therefore, it is very important to monitor the load level of the rock bolts. In this short communication, we propose a smart anchor plate, a simple but effective device that uses fiber Bragg gratings (F… Show more

“…Nowadays, non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques, including electromagnetic waves (EW) [14,15], X-ray diffraction [16], acoustic emission [17], ultrasonic guided waves [18][19][20], infrared thermal imaging [21], fiber optic sensors [22], and radar/microwave [23,24], are effective in structural damage detection. Although these methods can reflect the local damage state of the structure, they require complex and expensive instrument and professional interpretation, which makes it difficult to carry out real-time and on-line structure health monitoring [25].…”

“…When the stress value exceeds the strength limit or yield limit, the roadway surrounding rock mass breaks up and forms a certain range of rupture area [1]. For many years, rock bolts are commonly used to enhance the stability of surrounding rock [2][3][4][5]. However, rock bolts are subjected to the loose zone of pre-load [6][7][8] or corrosion [9][10][11] and may fail [12].…”

“…The stability of the roadway surrounding rock is closely related to mine safety and efficient production [6]. Though rock bolts have been often used to increase structural stability [7][8][9], data show that the deformation, cave-in, and collapse of mine roadways occur frequently in China; in the last 10 years, the cost of roadway support in Chinese mines has increased approximately 13 times [10]. Nearly 40% of tunnels require support due to excessive deformation, which seriously affects the normal production of mines [11].…”
