A List of Current Valid Blow Fly Names (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in the Americas South of Mexico with Key to the Brazilian Species

Abstract: Abstract. The calliphorids flies comprise a heterogenous family found in all zoogeographical regions, with over 1,000 species and 150 genera described. The blow flies have a great medical and veterinary importance, and can be use in forensic science, especially in order to estimate the postmortem interval. Despite its wide distribution and importance, the group presents many taxonomic problems, and many conflicting records regarding the number of species in the Neotropical Region. In this paper, we list all sp… Show more

“…The faster decomposition during the dry season when compared to the rainy season has already been reported by Carvalho & Linhares [45] and Oliveira-da-Silva et al [57][58][59][60] that justify it by saying it happens due to the high temperature, as well as the air's relative humidity. However, total decomposition period is different from that observed by the authors mentioned above, who had periods of 24 days for the rainy season and 11 days for the dry season.…”

“…listed L. coeruleiviridis in Guatemala, based on a single specimen examined. The listing by Kosmann et al (2013) of this species in the Neotropical Region appears to be based on . Since that study, the Guatemala specimen was re-examined and it was determined to be a discolored and nontypical specimen of L. eximia.…”

“…It was originally found in Africa, the Mediterranean and the Middle East and was introduced in Brazil in the 1970s. In addition, it has high synanthropy and can be found in several biotopes, including rural, urban and anthropic forest environments (Ferraz et al 2009, Batista-da-Silva et al 2010, Kosmann et al 2013, Cabrini et al 2013). This species has been reported to cause secondary myiasis in animals and humans (Guimaraes and Pavavero 1999).…”
