A light scattering study of non equilibrium fluctuations in liquid mixtures to measure the Soret and mass diffusion coefficient

Abstract: We use dynamic near field scattering to measure the dynamics of concentration non equilibrium fluctuations at the steady-state of Soret separation. The analysis reveals that above a threshold wave vector q c , the dynamics is governed by diffusion while at smaller wave vectors, gravity dominates. From the measurements, we extract both the mass diffusion and the Soret coefficients. Comparing our results with literature data, we find good agreement confirming that the proposed experimental technique can be consi… Show more

“…The presented results are in very good agreement with the reference data from [71]. A larger and more quantitative study has been performed over the last months using several other mixtures of the Fointainebleu benchmark and an extended paper containing all the data sets has been published recently [72]. In summary, the method outlined in this manuscript is capable of providing a measurement of the main mass transport properties of the analyzed fluid mixture without previous knowledge of the so-called optical contrast factors of the mixture ∂n/∂ T and ∂n/∂c.…”

“…Thus, the fastest decay rate Γ 2 (q) = γ 2 (q) q 2 exhibits a minimum for a certain q, a feature that (for binary mixtures) has been proposed to measure the Soret effect [33,34]. However, one important consequence of eq.…”
