A Halophila baillonis Ascherson bed on the semiarid coast of Brazil

Abstract: The present study records Halophila baillonis and describes the specimens of the Environmental Protection Area of the Parnaíba River Delta, Piauí, semiarid coast of Brazil. In August 2014, we mapped and characterized the seagrass meadow, and georeferenced the extent of H. baillonis patches within the area. Ten ramets were collected manually for biometric measurements, and five samples were collected using a PVC corer of 10 cm in diameter, inserted at 15 cm depth, to obtain averages of shoot density and belowgr… Show more

“…In contrast, H. decipiens has been correctly reported for the Caribbean of Costa Rica, with many herbarium samples, and it is currently present at Isla Uvita. Nonetheless, H. baillonis has recently been reported in the Caribbean Sea at Belize (Short, Fernandez, Vernon, & Gaeckle, 2006), Honduras (Caviedes-Sánchez & Carrasco, 2016), and in the Atlantic coast of Brazil (Barros, Costa, & Rocha-Barreira, 2014;Magalhães, Borges, & Pitanga, 2015); thus, the record by Dawson (1962) may have been correct, and it is also possible that this inconspicuous species may still be found along the Caribbean coasts of Costa Rica.…”

“…It is possible that in a near future, the expansion of studies in areas by the north coast of Brazil record new occurrences of this species, as recently observed for Halophila baillonis (Barros et al. ), especially if confirmed the record of N. P. Silva & T. G. P. Lima in February 2016 (Macapá Beach, Piauí State (360 km north of Pacoti River). Despite the need for more comprehensive studies on the biology of the species, this record is encouraging with regard to its conservation.…”

“…The occurrence of seagrass meadows in the shallowest part of the river, parallel to the margins, seems common in estuarine areas (Barros et al. , Magalhães and Barros submit. ), and may be related to limited light penetration, caused by the typical siltation in estuaries.…”
