ADrosophilamale pheromone affects female sexual receptivity

Abstract: Sex pheromones are chemical signals frequently required for mate choice, but their reciprocal role on mate preference has rarely been shown in both sexes. In Drosophila melanogaster flies, the predominant cuticular hydrocarbons (CHs) are sexually dimorphic: only females produce 7,11-dienes, whereas 7-tricosene (7-T) is the principal male CH. Males generally prefer females with 7,11-dienes, but the role of 7-T on female behaviour remains unclear. With perfumed males, control females mated faster and more often … Show more

“…We found similar age-dependent trends in many CHC from Canton-S and Fv males, and seven compounds reached statistical significance in both strains [nC21, 9-C23:1, 7-T, 2-MeC 24 and 2-MeC 28 from GC/MS; C 20 H 38 O 2 (cVA) and C 23 H 44 O from LDI-MS] (Fig.2). The compound 7-T is a known pheromone, and we found it to decrease significantly with age (Ferveur and Sureau, 1996;Grillet et al, 2006). Another prevalent compound, 7-P, exhibited a significant increase with age.…”

“…This glomerulus is implicated in the perception of cis-vaccenyl acetate (45,46), a male-specific volatile pheromone produced in the EjB (47), modulating sexual behavior (18,29). Both trichoid and basiconic sensilla could also respond to other sex pheromones (43,48), such as 7-T (a malepredominant CH) thought to be perceived by the antenna (49).…”

“…This would require that females can detect males who have previously been exposed to rivals and respond in a way that causes an increase in mating duration. Possible mechanisms include the detection by females of differences in a male's odour profile [32], stress responses or behaviour. The benefits to females of extending mating duration have not yet been determined but could include increased productivity and decreased overall mating frequency.…”
