A Drosophila gustatory receptor required for the responses to sucrose, glucose, and maltose identified by mRNA tagging

Abstract: In Drosophila, detection of tastants is thought to be mediated by members of a family of 68 gustatory receptors (Grs). However, only one receptor, Gr5a, has been associated with a sugar, and it appears to be activated specifically by trehalose. It is unclear whether other sugar receptors are activated by single or multiple sugars. Currently, no Grs are known to colocalize with Gr5a. Such Grs would be candidate sugar receptors because Gr5a-expressing cells function in the responses to attractive tastants. Here … Show more

“…Drosophila melanogaster recognizes several sugars, including fructose, glucose, and maltose, and flies' innate preferences to these compounds differ (2,3,6,8,14,15). Do flies discriminate different sugars based on perceived concentration differences (i.e., one compound has a higher stimulation efficacy) or based on qualitative differences of individual compounds (i.e., trehalose is processed differently from maltose)?…”

“…Our understanding of the molecular components required for contact chemosensation in insects is limited primarily to the identification of a series of gustatory receptors (18)(19)(20)(21)(22)(23)(24)(25). Currently, the channels required for contact chemosensation in insects are not known.…”

“…Gr5a is expressed in most sugar-responsive GRNs (7-9, 11, 12). Gr64a is essential for the detection of multiple other sugars, including sucrose, glucose, and maltose (13,14). A third receptor, Gr64f, is a coreceptor, which is broadly required for the detection of most sugars (15).…”
