A Hollow Silicone Finger Prosthesis with Modified Metal-Mesh Conformer

Abstract: Loss of an organ such as a finger not only imposes a functional impairment, but also leads to unaesthetic appearance and a deep psychological stigma to the patient. Hence replacement of such missing finger with the help of an artificial finger prosthesis has been very successful. The success of the prosthesis depends on the precision in meticulous planning and designing of prosthesis, technique of fabrication and the materials used. This article describes fabrication of a finger prosthesis by a modified techni… Show more

“…Hand and finger prostheses can include both aesthetic prostheses [292,293] and functional prostheses that include robotic elements that are covered with a cosmetic glove. [294] PVC and silicone are often used for the external materials and can enclose the electronics to make the prosthesis aesthetically pleasing and offer increased protection to the electronics.…”

“…The typical fabrication methodology used irreversible hydrocolloid to take an impression of the defect, followed by the creation of a positive cast using dental stone. The final wax patterns were then sculpted using either an impression of the contralateral finger (Shanmuganathan et al, 2011;Jacob et al, 2012;Aydin et al, 2013;Raghu et al, 2013;Saxena et al, 2014) or a donor finger (Arora et al, 2011;Kaira and Dabral, 2014) for their shape. Attachment strategies for non-functional prosthetic fingers include a glove fit over the stump of the remaining finger (Arora et al, 2011;Shanmuganathan et al, 2011;Jacob et al, 2012;Kaira and Dabral, 2014), implants (Aydin et al, 2013), or by a ring (Arora et al, 2011;Raghu et al, 2013).…”
