A Green New Balance: Interactions among riparian vegetation plant traits and morphodynamics in alluvial rivers

Abstract: The strength of interactions between plants and river processes is mediated by plant traits and fluvial conditions, including above-ground biomass, stem density and flexibility, channel and bed-material properties, and flow and sediment regimes. In many rivers, concurrent changes in (1) the composition of riparian vegetation communities as a result of exotic species invasion and (2) shifts in hydrology have altered physical and ecological conditions in a manner that has been mediated by feedbacks between veget… Show more

“…For example, ground‐based and airborne LiDAR (light detection and ranging) data were used to assess multiscale influence of woody riparian vegetation on fluvial topography (Bywater‐Reyes et al, 2017). Flume experiments and numerical modellings have been used to investigate the feedback between woody riparian vegetation and other floodplain characteristics (i.e., Bertoldi et al, 2015; Bywater‐Reyes et al, 2022; Lightbody et al, 2019; Wu et al, 2005). For instance, Lightbody et al (2019) focused on examining the presence and absence of riparian vegetation to sediment transport, topographic and hydraulic using an outdoor experimental facility.…”

“…Multiple studies have investigated linkages between flow, geomorphic processes and form, and riparian vegetation composition and abundance (e.g., Bywater-Reyes et al, 2022;Diehl et al, 2017Diehl et al, , 2018. For example, stream incision in urban systems due to increased runoff has been shown to reduce understory vegetation cover in riparian zones, as well as change riparian vegetation composition (Solins & Cadenasso, 2020, 2022.…”
