A glacial geomorphological map of the Monadhliath Mountains, Central Scottish Highlands

Abstract: The Monadhliath Mountains in the Central Scottish Highlands are dominated by an extensive plateau area that has received little Quaternary research attention during the last century. Previous studies have focussed on the geomorphology and sedimentology of isolated valleys and therefore the 1:57,500 map presented here provides the first systematic assessment of the glacial geomorphology of the region as a whole, covering an area of approximately 840 km 2 . Results of mapping from remotely sensed imagery and in … Show more

“…Using three different approaches to mapping allowed the advantages of each to be combined to produce a detailed and accurate geomorphological map, with robust genetic interpretations. Further details on this approach can be found in Boston (2012a). Sedimentological analysis, following procedures outlined by Evans and Benn (2004), was also used alongside the geomorphological mapping to provide additional information on the processes leading to landform genesis.…”

“…Such a combined approach, linking remote sensing data with direct field observations, has been successfully applied for the mapping of glacial landforms in various environmental settings (e.g. Bennett, Evans, Carbonneau, & Twigg, 2010;Boston, 2012;Brown, Evans, & Evans, 2011;Darvill, Stokes, Bentley, & Lovell, 2014;Evans, Ewertowski, & Orton, 2015a, 2015bEvans, Twigg, Rea, & Shand, 2007;Pearce, Rea, Bradwell, & McDougall, 2014). Geomorphic features were digitised using Esri ArcGIS and stored in a file geodatabase.…”

“…In the Central Scottish Highlands, a rather different landform assemblage is apparent. The extensive plateau areas of the Gaick and Monadhliath show impressive sequences of meltwater channels, suggesting the significant role of meltwater drainage in the behaviour of these ice masses (Boston, 2012;Sissons, 1974).…”
