Abstract: Titanosauria is an exceptionally diverse, globally-distributed clade of sauropod dinosaurs that includes the largest known land animals. Knowledge of titanosaurian pedal structure is critical to understanding the stance and locomotion of these enormous herbivores and, by extension, gigantic terrestrial vertebrates as a whole. However, completely preserved pedes are extremely rare among Titanosauria, especially as regards the truly giant members of the group. Here we describe Notocolossus gonzalezparejasi gen. … Show more

“…These two giant titanosaurs are nested within Lognkosauria, a diverse clade that includes most of the largest titanosaurs known. The successive sister taxa of Lognkosauria are Notocolossus [16] and Bonitasaura (a titanosaur known from a juvenile mid-sized specimen [42,43]). In contrast with previous analyses [15,17,28], Lognkosauria is here recovered as a nonlithostrotian clade of titanosaurs.…”

“…In southern Mendoza, sauropod remains are relatively abundant. Their record, includes an articulated distal caudal series of an indeterminate saltasaurid titanosaur (Wilson et al, 1999), the species Mendozasaurus neguyelap , Malarguesaurus florenciae (González Riga et al, 2009), and the latest discovery, Notocolossus gonzalezparejasi (González Riga et al, 2016). In addition to sauropods, theropod bones of Aerosteon riocoloradensis (Sereno et al, 2008) were collected in the same area.…”

“…6). As in the previous analysis (González Riga et al, 2018), the Lithostrotia is divided into two main branches: one leading to the Saltasauridae and another to the Lognkosauria. Volgatitan gen. nov. is recovered as a basal member of the second lineage.…”

“…For all other taxa the scoring of this character was changed from one to zero. The analytical protocol of the phylogenetic analyses follows that of González Riga et al (2018). Eight incomplete and unstable taxa were excluded from the matrix prior to the analysis (Astrophocaudia, Australodocus, Brontomerus, Fukuititan, Fusuisaurus, Liubangosaurus, Mongolosaurus, and Tendaguria).…”
