A direct (i.e. noniterative) method for desmearing the beam-height effect in small-angle X-ray scattering is discussed. The method is applicable to rectangular collimation systems with arbitrary beam-height intensity profiles. The process involves the construction of an upper-triangular matrix of terms containing the resolution information. A straightforward back-substitution process can then be used to determine the ideal pinhole-collimated curve for any experimental curve obtained with the given resolution. The principal advantage of the method lies in its simplicity, which facilitates an examination of the propagation of random errors through the desmearing process. A comparison between the direct method and the iterative approach of Glatter [J. Appl. Cryst. (1974), 7, 147-153] is made to illustrate the efficiency of the technique.

The influence of solid state drawing of solution-crystallized ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene on the structure has been studied. Results obtained by different wide-angle and small-angle X-ray techniques support a deformation mechanism, which was partially described by Peterlin. An extended mechanism is proposed, which not only explains the orientational effects observed via WAXS and SAXS fairly easily, but can also account for the constancy of the long period, the steady decrease of the meridional SAXS intensity, the increase in crystallinity and the increase in the longitudinal crystallite size as the draw ratio increases (starting from a draw ratio of 10). Furthermore, the observed changes in lateral apparent crystal sizes as well as the stress-strain behaviour during the drawing process can be understood easily in terms of this model.

The crystalline structure of two biodegradable odd-odd polyesters (i.e., poly(nonamethylene pimelate) (PES 9,7) and poly(nonamethylene azelate) (PES 9,9)) was investigated by means of electron and X-ray diffraction of single crystals and oriented fibers, respectively. Truncated rhombic crystals were obtained with an aspect ratio that was strongly depended on the supercooling degree. The crystalline structure of both homopolyesters was defined by an orthorhombic P2 1 ab space group and a large unit cell containing four molecular segments with an all-trans conformation. Nevertheless, the structure in the chain axis projection was equivalent to a simpler cell containing only two segments. Crystalline lamellae were effectively degraded by lipases, starting the enzymatic attack on the lamellar surfaces. The random copolymer constituted by an equimolar amount of pimelate and azelate units (COPES 9,7/9) crystallized according to regular lamellae with a similar molecular arrangement in the chain axis projection. The structure of this copolymer was preferably conditioned by the azelate component as could be deduced from both, diffraction and spectroscopic data. Analysis of small angle X-ray scattering patterns pointed out that less crystalline lamellae with higher amorphous thickness had developed in the copolymer.
