The phytochemical study of Stereocaulon montagneanum harvested in Sumatra (Indonesia) led to the isolation of 11 known compounds including two metabolites not previously described in the genus Stereocaulon, peristictic acid (8) and menegazziaic acid (10). The complete 1H and 13C NMR spectral assignments of stictic acid derivatives are reported with some revisions. Five depsidones belonging to the stictic acid chemosyndrome were superoxide anion scavengers as potent as ascorbic acid and with no toxicity on two human cell lines.

Recebido em 12/2/98; aceito em 21/8/98 THE CHEMISTRY OF LICHENS. Lichens are symbiotic associations between fungi and algae and/or cyanobacteria. They produce common intracellular products including proteins, amino acids, polyols, carotenoids, polysaccharides and vitamins. The secondary metabolites found in lichens are phenolics which accumulate either on the cortex or on the cell walls of medullary hyphae and they are mainly acetyl-polimalonyl pathway derivatives. Polysaccharides, proteins and secondary metabolites produced by lichens have attracted the attention of investigators due their biological activities. This revision coments about the biosynthetic origin and structures of the principal classes of compounds produced by these organisms.Keyword: lichens; liquenic compounds; chemotaxonomy. DIVULGAÇÃO INTRODUÇÃODefine-se liquens como organismos simbióticos compostos por um fungo (micobionte) e uma ou mais algas (fotobionte) 1 .Calcula-se que existam 13.500 espécies (aproximadamente 600 gêneros) de fungos liquenizados, o que corresponde a 20% dos fungos conhecidos 2,3 . A grande maioria (98%) dos fungos liquênicos são Ascomicetos e 46% desses são liquenizados, de modo que a liquenização é uma grande regra e não uma exceção nesse grupo de fungos. Os Deuteromicetos ou fungos imperfeitos são representados por apenas uma dezena de gêneros, ou pouco mais. Os Basidiomicetos formam diversas associações semelhantes a liquens em regiões tropicais e são encontrados com algas azuis. Algumas espécies do gênero Dictyonema ocorrem como Basidiomiceto liquenizado 2 .As algas mais comuns encontradas na associação são as clorofíceas e destas a mais freqüente é uma espécie de Trebouxia, em aproximadamente 70% dos gêneros de liquens. Além dessa, ocorrem também espécies de Coccomyxa e Trentepohlia. Entre as algas verde-azuladas (cianofíceas), as mais comuns são a Nostoc e Scytonema 4 .Nos liquens, as algas constituem, com raras exceções, uma parte muito pequena do talo variando entre 5-10% da massa ou volume e são completamente envolvidas pelos tecidos do fungo nos talos. Portanto, toda a organização do talo liquênico se deve ao fungo. As algas podem, ou não, estar restritas a uma camada especial do talo e responsabilizam-se totalmente pela fotossíntese 3 .O micobionte, geralmente dominante, é um organismo heterotrófico que obtém sua fonte de carbono do fotobionte. A liquenização pode ser considerada uma estratégia pela qual o fungo pode satisfazer sua necessidade de carboidrato para respiração e crescimento 2 . Sabe-se hoje, que polióis em liquens com algas verdes e glucose em liquens com cianofíceas são passados do fotobionte para o micobionte Com relação à alga, as vantagens não estão associadas a ganhos metabólicos em si, mas a benefícios, de alguma maneira, relativos à hidratação, evitando dessecação.
