A Driving Simulation to Analysis and Quantitative Comparison of Driving Behavior of Guide Signs at Intersections

Abstract: Guide signs are an important source for drivers to obtain road information. However, the evaluation methods for the effectiveness of guide signs are not unified. The quantitative model for evaluating guide signs needs to be constructed to unify the current system of guide signs. This study aims to take the commonly used guide signs in China as the research object to explore the evaluation method of guide signs at intersections. Eight kinds of guide signs were designed and made based on the common layout (layou… Show more

“…Through the simulated driving test, Huang et al [ 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 ] examined how the complexity of diagrammatic guide signs affected the drivers’ eye movements and driving behavior, emphasized the need for evaluating and optimizing complex diagrammatic guide signs, and suggested the ideal design scheme for advanced guide signs on the urban expressway. The impact of the layout form and information volume of the intersection guidance signs on the driver’s driving behavior was examined by Wei et al [ 21 ] and Yao et al [ 22 ]. The guide signs’ quantitative evaluation results reveal that visual safety reduces as information volume on the signs rises.…”

“…The driving simulator enables drivers to drive virtually on a synthetic road, and they are cost-effective, safe, and suitable for preliminary algorithm tests. Their limitations are prediction infidelity caused by non-natural driving scenarios, and lower generalizability [133], [134], [135].…”

“…Consequently, researchers have sought to optimize sign layouts. For instance, eye-tracking technology was used to gather eye movement data during a simulated driving test, enabling an investigation into drivers' visual recognition time and behavior with factor analysis and gray correlation analysis [62]. While manipulating the positions of various speed limit signs, researchers observed drivers' eye movement behavior and driving speed, thereby uncovering the influence of sign placement on drivers' visual attention across different scenarios [63].…”
