A detailed morphological, phylogenetic and ecophysiological analysis of four benthic Anabaena (Nostocales, Cyanobacteria) strains confirms deep heterogeneity within the genus

Abstract: Four benthic Anabaena strains isolated from different localities in the Czech Republic were examined from the morphological, phylogenetic, and physiological points of view. The results of combined analysis showed distinct morphological dissimilarity between the studied strains, which were further found to belong to different phylogenetic groups based on the 16S rRNA gene phylogeny. To assess the temperature and light (irradiance) optima of the strains, we exposed them to various combinations of these two param… Show more

“…produce akinetes. Several genera, Anabaena, Trichormus and Wollea, are arguably polyphyletic, and partial taxonomic revision in these genera involved combination and separation among some taxa (Rajaniemi et al 2005a;Kozhevnikov & Kozhevnikova 2011, Kust et al 2015Kust et al 2018). Nostoc, the type genus of this family, is probably the most problematic one since it contains complicated and widely distributed cyanobacterial types.…”

“…Substantial ecophysiological differences occur within species (ecotypes; see e.g. Piccini et al, 2011;Miotto et al, 2017), and within species of the same genera (Kust et al, 2015;Lengyel et al, 2020)-all belonging to the same functional group. Minor differences between ecophysiological tolerance levels may basically determine dispersal opportunities (Lengyel et al, 2020) or even competition between species of different functional groups can be strain dependent (Marinho et al, 2013).…”

“…According to this author, data about benthic population are very scarce. Kust et al (2015) mentioned that Anabaena is very complex and possibly should be split into several new monophyletic taxa, which could cover distinct morphoand ecotypes. Thus, morphological and ecological features of this population suggest that it can be a new species to science.…”
