A Defected Ground Structure Based on Matryoshka Geometry

Abstract: A Defected Ground Structure, DGS, based on matryoshka geometry is described in this paper. The proposed DGS geometry is outlined and initial design equations are presented. Four prototypes, with resonant frequencies 2.17 GHz, 2.44 GHz, 2.99 GHz and 3.73 GHz, were designed, fabricated and characterized, observing a good agreement between measured and numerical results. Also, the obtained results demonstrated the initial design equations usefulness. The resonant behavior was analyzed in terms of the current dens… Show more

“…Due to ease of integration, design flexibility, and compactness, DGSs have found several applications such as in planar antennas [58,59], filters [60,61], power dividers [62,63], sensors [64,65], and wireless power transfer [66,67]. A DGS based on a Matryoshka geometry, as shown in Figure 54, was introduced in [30,43,68]. In [30], a method to design this type of DGS based on simple formulas is proposed.…”

“…As the rings are interconnected, the effective length of the matryoshka ring increases, without increasing the occupied area, limited to the area of the outmost concentric ring. This characteristic, when applied to frequency selective surfaces [19], [20] and filters [18], gives to matryoshka geometry a multi-resonance and more selective frequency response, as well as miniaturized dimensions. Although it is possible to use more than two concentric rings forming the matryoshka ring, in this work only two concentric rings will be considered.…”

“…Usually, 𝑤 𝑥𝑚𝑎1 = 𝑤 𝑦𝑚𝑎1 = 𝑤 𝑚𝑎1 and 𝑤 𝑥𝑚𝑎2 = 𝑤 𝑦𝑚𝑎2 = 𝑤 𝑚𝑎2 . As a first approach, the resonant frequency can be estimated by [18]:…”

“…Excluding the areas of optics and optoelectronics, where Brazil has a strong research tradition, the research scope on RF and microwaves covered by Brazilian institutions is very broad. It includes antennas [12] - [16], [23], specific absorption rate (SAR) studies [17], [18], frequency selective surfaces [19]- [21], defected ground structures (DGS) [22], metamaterials [23], [24], wireless power transfer [16], [25], [26], power transmission lines monitoring [27], [28], low-cost radars for human movement detection [29], [30], CAD techniques [29]- [32], low-cost RFID technologies [33], [34], negative group delay circuits [35]- [38], EM field analysis and waveguide component design [39] - [43].…”
