Abstract: The inducible protein heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) catalyzes the oxidation of heme to carbon monoxide (CO) and biliverdin, which play a concerted action in cytoprotection against oxidative stress and in the modulation of cell proliferation and differentiation.
