It is increasingly common that children of divorce are geographically separated from one of their parents. This article considers the challenges that arise from that reality by exploring this problem from a variety of perspectives and by providing practical tips to minimize the impact of the distance. A review of the Ontario caselaw and Arizona Guidelines reveal that certain factors are important in the resolution of these disputes, including: the age of the child, mode of transportation between homes, distance, prior contact, and feasibility of virtual access. Court‐ordered access may include remedies that, absent the distance issue, may be considered extreme, including moving to overnight/extended access periods for young children, permitting children to travel unaccompanied, favoring the nonresident parent for holidays and vacation time, allowing children to decrease contact with the nonresident parent, and decreasing or terminating child support. Where distance dictates the in‐person and virtual access schedules, creative solutions are critical to the successful resolution of these cases. Forward thinking family law professionals can meaningfully help parents to achieve better outcomes for children.

El presente estudio descriptivo muestra la valoración que los psicólogos forenses españoles (N = 64), otorgan a los criterios propuestos en la literatura científica para valorar casos de solicitud de traslado de menores tras la ruptura de los progenitores. Los resultados muestran que los profesionales otorgaron una alta importancia a los criterios de evaluación propuestos, situándose en posiciones inferiores criterios relacionados con aspectos de infraestructura y organización familiar, económicos y culturales. Respecto al asesoramiento técnico sobre la conveniencia o inconveniencia del traslado, se aprecia que en pocas ocasiones los profesionales informan de forma favorable al cambio de residencia, mostrando una inclinación por el mantenimiento del statu quo. Child relocation after break up: Importance of evaluative criteria A B S T R A C T This descriptive study analyzes Spanish forensic psychologists' (N = 64) rating of criteria proposed in the scientific literature to assess relocation cases after parents' separation. Our results showed that forensic psychologists gave a high importance to evaluation criteria suggested, giving a lower ranking to criteria related to infrastructural, economic, and cultural aspects. Regarding the technical advice on the convenience or inconvenience of the relocation, it is observed that professionals reported favorably to the change of residence only in few occasions, showing a trend to maintain the statu quo.

Petitions by custodial parents to relocate children away from non-custodial parents present difficult choices for family courts. In the current study, the sample (N = 81) was randomly recruited through the children’s schools according to the following criteria: Children were 12 years old and at the time resided primarily with their mothers; mothers had been living with a male partner “acting in a father role” for at least the previous year. Thirty-eight children had been separated by more than an hour’s drive from their biological fathers due to either their mothers or fathers relocating. The data were collected from two reporters (children and mothers) at five time points (child ages 12.5, 14, 15.5, 19.5, and 22) by trained interviewers using standardized measures with adequate reliability and validity. Long-distance separation from biological fathers prior to age 12 was linked in adolescence and young adulthood to serious behavior problems, anxiety and depression symptoms, and disturbed relationships with all three parental figures (i.e., biological fathers, mothers, and step-fathers). These associations held after controlling for mother-stepfather conflict and domestic violence, mothers’ family income, and mother-biological father relationship quality. These longitudinal findings over time replicated the cross-sectional findings of Braver, Ellman, and Fabricius (2003) and Fabricius and Braver (2006). Policy implications for parental long-distance relocation following separation are discussed.
