A cost analysis of a long‐term prospective study of patients treated with immediately loaded implant‐supported mandibular overdentures

Abstract: This long-term study confirmed that ILP is associated with higher maintenance costs and varying subjective QoL measurements. Clinical treatment protocols should be evaluated over a long period and address different perspectives.

“…When comparing the “old” CD (71 OHIP‐20 points) versus a mandibular IOD‐2 after 1 year (28 OHIP‐20 points), an improvement of 43 points was detected, which is more than 4 times the MID of 9 points 33 . The same trend was seen in the study by Attard and colleagues; an improvement of 47 points was detected for an IOD‐2 versus the “old” CD 34 .…”

“…It is important to emphasize, however, that these findings are applicable to the specific treatment modality described in the current study, and should not be extrapolated to other protocols. Immediately loaded implant‐supported overdenture were shown to be associated with higher long‐term maintenance costs . Therefore, the sustained maintenance costs over future years should be factored in when treatment planning an edentulous case, since the vast majority of patients who seek these treatment modalities are either elderly individuals or patients with low socioeconomic status.…”
