Abstract: This letter proposes a converter-level method for measuring the on-state voltages of all power semiconductors in a single-phase inverter by using a single circuit only. The proposed circuit distinguishes itself by connecting to the middle-point of each phase-leg, instead of the two powerterminals of individual devices as conventional methods do. It has the advantages of reduced circuit complexity, size, cost, and ease of connection. The principle and theoretical analysis of the proposed converter-level method … Show more

“…The device under test (DUT) in this case study is T1 and its on-state voltage V CE,sat is measured on-line through a circuit that is capable of extracting the low on-state voltage (e.g., up to few Volts) from the high DC-link voltage (e.g., up to kVlevel) with the resolution in mV-level, which is detailed in [24,25]. The specifications are shown in Table I.…”

“…Overall, with enough data sampling frequency, the proposed method can be implemented in an operating converter by five steps: 1) extract the data over 5-10 switching cycles at the beginning; 2) confirm the current data is in upward-track or downward-track by calculating the change rate of each current data through (6); 3) find the similar currents in upward-track and downward-track, respectively, and corresponding on-state voltages; 4) calculate L σ,tot and its average; 5) compensate V CE,sat through the calculated average of L σ,tot and measured current.…”

“…Therefore, their accurate measurement is essential to the realization of predictive maintenance and reliability improvement [1]. Tremendous efforts have been devoted to realizing the online measurement of on-state voltage, consisting of component-level solutions [3][4][5] and converter-level solutions [6,7].…”

“…However, the voltage measurement circuit highly depends on the architecture of the power converters in terms of topology and control. To solve the problem, authors in [8] propose a converter-level method for measuring the on-state voltages of all power semi-conductors in a single-phase inverter by using only a simple circuit. The proposed circuit has better accessibility because of converter-level implementation, and the isolation stage can be simplified with it.…”

“…Current sensors are also widely used practically, such as the Hall sensors. Recently, more magnetic sensors have been developed, which may achieve higher performance [8][9][10][11][12][13]. Some emerging research studies are also being carried out on the integrated sensors at the device gate driver (GD).…”
