A concordance of self‐reported and performance‐based assessments of mobility as a mortality predictor for older Mexican Americans

Abstract: AIM To assess the efficacy in mortality prediction of a concordance of performance-based (timed 10-foot walk {POMA}) and self-rated (reported ability to walk across a small room with no help from people or devices {ADL}) assessments of mobility for Mexican Americans aged 75 and over. Methods Longitudinal study of 2069 subjects aged 75 years and older from the Hispanic Established Population for the Epidemiological Study of the Elderly (EPESE) Wave 5 (2004–06 ~ 2006–01) and Wave 6 (2007–02 ~ 2008–02). “…First, we find that the healthy immigrant hypothesis is only observable among mid-and late-life migrant men for ADL disability. This supports prior research that the healthy immigrant hypothesis is more reflective of the life course processes for men rather than for women (Melvin et al 2014;Angel et al 2014;Garcia et al 2015;Nam et al 2016;Sheftel 2017;Garcia and Reyes 2018).…”

“…Overall, there is evidence that the healthy immigrant effect is more reflective of health patterns for men than women (Read and Reynolds 2012) and among the Mexican-origin population in particular (Angel et al 2014;Melvin et al 2014;Garcia et al 2015;Nam et al 2016;Sheftel 2017;Garcia and Reyes 2018). Observed gender differences in the healthy immigrant effect may be attributed to patterns of selective migration.…”

“… Bergland et al (2017) applied the TUG test in Norway (survey data about 1005 people over 65, of which 846 complete), showing that TUG scores are important predictors for survival in both men and women. POMA test, indeed, was found to be effective in mortality prediction among 2069 US older people by Nam et al (2017) . On the contrary, Ensrud et al (2016) reported that the SPPB test applied on 1495 US women (interviews) gave strong evidence of mobility as a predictor of mortality risk but the interaction with cognition was not enough to predict mortality rates.…”

“…In a previous study, a discrepancy between self-reported subjective physical function and test-based objective physical function was reported to be associated with future falls [28]. Furthermore, a discrepancy between self-reported mobility and test-based mobility was reported to be associated with mortality [29]. In addition, the interaction between subjective cognition and objective cognition was also found to have an effect on actual memory performance in previous studies [30].…”
