Abstract: This paper introduces a novel methodology for extracting semantic frames from text corpora. Building on recent advances in computational construction grammar, the method captures expert knowledge of how semantic frames can be expressed in the form of conventionalised form-meaning pairings, called constructions. By combining these constructions in a semantic parsing process, the frame-semantic structure of a sentence is retrieved through the intermediary of its morpho-syntactic structure. The main advantage of … Show more

“…Regarding the validity of this approach, this article has mainly focused on the technical aspects of the Penelope opinion facilitator, that is, how an experimental method for semantic frame extraction can be operationalized in an openly available proof-of-concept instrument. The paper has thereby noted and referred to resources concerning the internal validity of the semantic frame extraction method, providing evidence that the method is picking up the range of plausible alternative causes and effects in the data based on metrics for precision and recall (Beuls et al (2021)). As such, however, the paper only covers part of the ODYCCEUS project's wider research project into opinion facilitation, which also involves testing and validation of the developed instruments with the wider public and stakeholders such as foundations, media companies, and institutions and companies working in the area of opinion dynamics and conflict management (for a follow-up project, Trendify, n.d.).…”

“…Semantic frame extraction: semantic frames (viz. causation frame instances) are extracted from the corpus of texts using the aforementioned computational construction grammar approach to semantic frame extraction (Beuls et al 2021). The semantic frame extractor that operationalizes this method is openly available from the Penelope ecosystem of tools as a web service.…”

“…In order to automatically mine cause and effect concepts from the corpus of comments on The Guardian, the present article uses the Penelope semantic frame extractor: a tool that exploits the fact that semantic frames can be expressed as form-meaning mappings called constructions (Penelope semantic frame extractor, 2020; for an in-depth discussion and evaluation of this tool see Beuls et al, 2021). Notably, frames were extracted from Guardian comments by focusing on the following lexical units (verbs, prepositions, and conjunctions), listed in FrameNet as frame evoking elements of the causation frame: 'cause', 'due to', 'because', 'because of', 'give rise to', 'lead to', and 'result in'.…”

“…This movement is witnessed by the increased presence of talks, tutorials and courses on computational construction grammar at international conferences and schools, such as the 2014 Language Resources and Evaluation Conference (LREC), the 2017 Interdisciplinary College (IK) Spring School, the 2020 LOT Winter School, and the 2018 and 2021 International Conferences on Construction Grammar (ICCG). Computational approaches bear the promise of establishing more solid foundations for the field of construction grammar and of expanding its application potential, as they make it possible to (i) automatically verify the precision and internal consistency of linguistic analyses [ 18 – 24 ], (ii) corroborate these analyses with corpus data [ 20 , 25 – 28 ], and (iii) exploit linguistic insights and analyses for enhancing the performance of language technology applications [ 29 32 ].…”
