A Comparative Study on the Energy Demand of Turkey: Coal or Natural Gas

Abstract: Energy demand which has increased rapidly is estimated to increase also in the future. Coal and natural gas would continue to have primary role in electricity generation and industry. Turkey's energy consumption has been growing faster than its production. Natural gas is the greatest source in the energy consumption with a share of 32%. Lignite coal is major domestic energy source of Turkey and its reserves are 12.4 billion tons. Since most of the lignite reserves are low in quality, they are used mostly in el… Show more

“…In a study conducted by Ocal et al (2013), the relationship between coal consumption and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Türkiye was examined based on data for the period 1980-2006. In the study conducted by Capik et al (2013), Türkiye's energy demand based on hard coal, lignite and natural gas was evaluated. In the study conducted by Ören and Şensöğüt (2019), information on coal potential, which plays a key role in Türkiye's electricity generation, is compared with renewable energy sources in terms of future energy policies, considering this potential.…”

“…Unfortunately, Pakistan is the country who is blessed with sufficient resources but utilizing the minimum of it. According to some statistics there are 929 billion tons' coal reserves in the whole world, from which 40% is used to produce electricity (Capik, Kolayli, & Yılmaz, 2013). Whereas 178 billion tons of coal exists in Pakistan whose price is almost 30 trillion dollars which is 187 times greater than Pakistan's current GDP (Awan & Khan, 2014).…”

“…It has growing import values in all fossil energy sources except lignite and asphaltite. There is an increasing demand for electricity and energy dependency in the proportion of economic growth [3][4][5]. Turkey, which is experiencing a steady increase in greenhouse (GHG) emissions, also needs to take preventive measures.…”
