A cobertura de ciência em três jornais paraenses: um estudo longitudinal

Abstract: In this paper, we suggest a methodology aiming to present a longitudinal study able to present a panorama of the science coverage for 130 years by three important newspapers in Pará: A Província do Pará (1876-2002), Folha do Norte (1896-1974) and O Liberal (1946. We studied a period of two months every ten years, from 1876 to 2006, in each newspaper, aiming to obtain a long term view through the history of the newspapers and, thus, through most of the history of the press in Pará and in Amazon. We used conten… Show more

“…Amorim and Massarani [2008] found that science news emphasised discovery and paid hardly any attention to context. Carvalho, Massarani and Anjos Seixas [2015] observed that scientific controversies and uncertainties gained little space in the newspapers of Pará over the course of 130 years of science coverage. This view characterises the classic approach of science journalism, marked by the enthusiasm for the scientist and science, emphasising positive results and certainty about the continuity of the research presented.…”

“…Instead of examining publications addressed to the general public in which the coverage of science is not frequent, as in previous studies [Vaz and Portugal, 2012;Clair, 2013], we preferred to examine those who presented a section and had their own science team. Newspapers published in the cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Recife, in the state of Pernambuco, and Belém, in the state of Pará, have science sections [Amorim and Massarani, 2008;Carvalho, Massarani and Anjos Seixas, 2015], but not all digitised and released their digital collections -essential for a retrospective analysis -for online access. Despite their limited geographic representativeness, we selected two daily newspapers from São Paulo, Folha de São Paulo (hereinafter FSP) and O Estado de São Paulo (ESP), both with science teams and on-line collections.…”

“…From this selection of articles directly and explicitly related to Asylum, a thematic analysis was conducted [50,51] in a documental analysis in order to: "synthesize and reduce the amount of information available, in order to arrive at an interpretation of the main trends and patterns present in their data" [52] (p. 7). The information was analyzed and the system of categories created by two of the authors (first independently, after which the categorization systems were compared and motivated some reformulations in the final version), in which the corpus documental (the news collected from the newspapers O Faialense and O Telégrafo) was selected illustrative text units for the (re)creation of the categories.…”

“…From this selection of articles directly and explicitly related to Asylum, a qualitative thematic analysis was conducted (Cárdenas, 2010;Carvalho, Massarani, & Seixas, 2015) that is structured based on the following elements: theme, specific subject, depth, orientation (positive, negative or neutral); type of information (announcement, information, opinion/comment), local, national or international reference. The privileged dimensions in the content analysis were the following: Perception of the condition of invalid childhood; Asylum assistance; Assistance strategies: charity, philanthropy.…”
