INTRODUÇÃO 1.1 A química de produtos naturais: breve contextualização O uso terapêutico de plantas medicinais é característico da espécie humana e acompanha sua evolução através dos tempos. Morton (1988), ao traçar um perfil cronológico da relação homem-planta desde tempos ancestrais até o século XX, salienta a dicotomia uso-valor como fator que norteou o desenvolvimento da botânica como ciência. Durante a maior parte da história da humanidade a medicina e a botânica não eram disciplinas distintas e sim um conjunto de conhecimentos utilizados pelos xamãs (ou equivalentes sob demais epítetos) para tratar de quaisquer males, físicos ou espirituais, que poderiam afligir os membros de seu grupo (SCHULTES, 1972; CORDELL, 1993). De forma geral, os primeiros trabalhos que buscavam nomear e categorizar os vegetais tinham como base aqueles de relevância medicinal. Theophrastus (370 -280 A.C.), contemporâneo (e pupilo, dizem) de Aristóteles, foi o primeiro a compilar informações sobre plantas medicinais oriundas de manuscritos egípcios, assírios e babilônicos, entre outros, e cunhar uma terminologia descritiva em seus trabalhos Historia Plantarum e Causae Plantarum.
