A blockchain based Trusted Persistent Identifier system for Big Data in Science

Abstract: A stable reference of Internet resources is crucial not only to identify a resource in a trustworthy and certified way but also to guarantee continuous access to it over time. The current practice in scientific publication as the use of a Persistent Identifier (PID) like a DOI or Handle, is becoming attractive also for the datasets. In fact, in the era of Big Data, the aspects of replicability and verification of the scientific result are paramount. In this paper we verify the functional feasibility of permiss… Show more

“…This would provide a layer of records "security" to our DDPH proposal. Their stability, transparency and decentralization make blockchain technology attractive and promising for use in scientific communication (Bellini, 2019). An author's manuscript can be considered as a digital asset that is transferred (transaction) between different participants in the scientific publication process, and all details of the asset transfers and actions agreed upon by participants will be securely recorded in 'smart contracts'.…”

“…Hence, DLTs implement a level of transparency, traceability, and security by design [52]. These properties make them suitable to be a technology that enhances security, privacy, and trustworthiness in very diverse contexts such as in IoT [53]- [55], voting system [56], machine-to-machine environments [57], and persistent identifier systems [58].…”

“…Some other works in [20][21][22] create a tamper-proof ledger that is delivered among all participants. This technique can the data recorded in the ledger safe from illegally changing by the other unauthorized users and is applied in a diversity of contexts as in voting system [24], machine-to-machine environment [23], and identifier systems [25]. Another work that is the closest to our work is [7].…”
