A 21st century miniguide to sporophore morphogenesis and development in Agaricomycetes and their biotechnological potential

Abstract: We review the most recent developments in understanding the nature of development and morphogenesis in fungi and suggest how it might be applied to biotechnological manipulation of some cultivated mushrooms. We believe that it is essential to match the deductions of the molecular observations of the genomics generation with the inductive reasoning of the in vivo experiments and observations of the pregenomics generations to take full advantage of the synergism between the approaches to illuminate better the li… Show more

“…Fruiting body development has been investigated both in model systems (C. cinerea and S. commune) and in a few edible mushrooms with commercial value, such as A. bisporus, P. ostreatus, L. edodes, and F. velutipes. The development of most of these fungi has been reviewed elsewhere recently (15,65,133). Therefore, we do not present here the developmental process in great detail; rather, we only briefly discuss the development of C. cinerea (Fig.…”

“…The fact that fruiting body initiation can bypass mating suggests that the process has a certain degree of autonomy, which might be reflected as modularity or hierarchy in the underlying regulatory networks. Moore et al characterized fruiting body morphogenesis as being made up of developmental subroutines that are somewhat independent of each other and that makes the whole process resilient to a certain degree of developmental imprecision(Loftus et al 2020). Transcriptional changes during the initiation of fruiting are significant.…”

“…Since ancient times, man has consumed wild mushrooms probably delicately, due to their pleasant taste [7]. They have a great nutritional value with a high content of proteins, vitamins, minerals, fibers, trace elements and low/no calories and cholesterol [8]. Mushrooms have been described as a rich source of different bioactive substances such as antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antiparasitic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, anticancer, antitumor, cytotoxic, anti-HIV, hypocholesterolemic, antidiabetic, anticoagulant and hepatoprotective compounds, among other [7,8,9].…”
