8×8 planar phased array antenna with high efficiency and insensitivity properties for 5G mobile base stations

Abstract: An insensitive planar phased array antenna with high efficiency function for 5G applications is introduced in this study. 64-elements of compact slot-loop antenna elements have been used to form the 8×8 planar array. The antenna is designed on a low cost FR4 substrate and has good performance in terms of gain and efficiency. This property has been achieved by applying a new slot-loop resonators. The proposed antenna is designed to operate at 21-23.5 GHz and has a same performance for different values of dielec… Show more

“…It is seen that excellent radiation beams over of 0-70 scanning angles are provided. As shown, the design provides well-defined radiation beams at 0°,15°, 30°,45°, 60°, and 70° which could cover half-space of the radiation coverage for the smartphone mainboard [35][36][37]. Fundamental properties of the design including directivity and efficiencies for the steered beams of the mobile-phone array at 19 GHz design are presented in Fig.…”

“…Every element of the antenna are located sideways the two wide sides of a 130×75 mm 2 ground plane, which is almost the identical measurement of today's smart mobile phones. Eight antenna components are designed on two minor substrates which are placed perpendicular on the central system substrate [25][26][27][28].…”

“…The antenna elements are arranged with a distance of d = 5 mm. As it can be observed, it is composed of eight 26 GHz Quasi-Yagi antenna elements and could be used on the top/bottom portions of the smartphone PCB to form two sets of linear phased arrays [24,25]. Figure 9 shows a phased array system architecture with a feeding network that could be used for the linear phased array Quasi-Yagi antenna and can be demonstrated using phase shifters for beam switching.…”
