Abstract: The purpose of this paper was to review the theoretical underpinnings, major concepts, and methods of the typological approach. It was argued that the typological approach offers a systematic, empirically rigorous and reliable way to synthesize the nomothetic variable-centered approach with the idiographic case-centered approach. Recent advances in cluster analysis validation make it a promising method for uncovering natural typologies. This paper also reviewed findings from personality and family studies that… Show more

“…In their discussion of the strengths and limitations of variable-and person-centered approaches, Mandara (2003) and Bergman and Andersson (2010) pointed out that a strictly variable-or person-centered approach narrows the possibilities of understanding a complex reality and, therefore, hampers progress in research on child and family psychology. Since subspace K-means combines both approaches (i.e., clustering of parents and reduction of parenting behaviors to broader parenting dimensions), we expect that it will provide more fine-grained information on parenting than could be obtained with either factor or cluster analysis alone, which will be useful in understanding child functioning.…”

“…This is the most difficult decision in cluster analysis, and has traditionally been the Achilles 0 heel of cluster analysis (Mandara 2003). In order to accomplish this purpose, 20 samples that resulted from ten random divisions of the total data in two equal size samples were first submitted to hierarchical cluster analysis.…”

“…The number of clusters to be retained was decided by means of a replication analysis. A modification of the replication method developed by McIntyre and Blashfield (1980), described by Mandara (2003), was applied. The method of replication was as follows: first, a full cluster analysis is performed on one of the samples (sample A).…”

“…Diversos autores han apoyado la conveniencia de utilizar una aproximación tipológica para estudiar conductas complejas, argumentando que esta aproximación multidimensional puede proporcionar una mayor comprensión de la influencia de las características de los padres en el desarrollo de los hijos que el aná-lisis de las prácticas educativas usadas como factores de riesgo (Bergman y Magnusson, 1997;Henry, Tolan, y Gorman-Smith, 2005;Mandara, 2003).…”
