5G Use in Healthcare: The Future is Present

Abstract: Background: Most healthcare providers are unaware of the extraordinary opportunities for implementation in healthcare which can be enabled by 5G wireless networks. 5G created enormous opportunities for a myriad of new technologies, resulting in an integrated through 5G ‘ecosystem’. Although the new opportunities in healthcare are immense, medicine is slow to change, as manifest by the paucity of new, innovative applications based upon this ecosystem. Thus, emerges the need to “avoid technology sur… Show more

“…With network reliability and improvement in latency, realizing the promises of remote ultrasound examination that have been present since the first remote ultrasonic robot system (i.e., the TER system) was reported in 2003 ( 40 ). Data streams can more effectively meet the encoding requirements for conveying ultrasound images and videos than the transmission carrying capacity of traditional 4G networks ( 41 ). Therefore, no noticeable delay occurred during scanning, and each examination was completed rapidly and almost in real time.…”

“…This criterion has been mostly addressed by the introduction of 5G technology. 5G technology has been widely applied in the field of telemedicine ( 41 ). Since 2020, several remote laparoscopic experimental procedures utilizing the 5G wireless network have been performed successfully with an average delay of only 264 ms, with no surgical complications or prolonged operation time ( 42 ).…”
