5G-enabled contactless multi-user presence and activity detection for independent assisted living

Abstract: Wireless sensing is the state-of-the-art technique for next generation health activity monitoring. Smart homes and healthcare centres have a demand for multi-subject health activity monitoring to cater for future requirements. 5G-sensing coupled with deep learning models has enabled smart health monitoring systems, which have the potential to classify multiple activities based on variations in channel state information (CSI) of wireless signals. Proposed is the first 5G-enabled system operating at 3.75 GHz for… Show more

“…Further, the problem of muti-person activity monitoring with RF sensing has been addressed in one of our previous works 3 , which was the first 5G-enabled multi-person activity monitoring system with 4 subjects in 16 unique activity combinations. The proposed system combined the subject count and activities performed in different classes together, resulting in simultaneous identification of the occupancy count and activities performed.…”

“…These concerns can be addressed by exploiting a contact-less human activity monitoring system. In this regard, various contact-less solutions are proposed in the literature, exploiting channel state information (CSI) of microwave-based wireless systems, such as WiFi 2 and 5G 3 or Doppler signatures of radar systems 4 . The principle of microwave sensing is based on observing the variations in the reflected signal due to movement of the target.…”

“…Implementation of 5G technology in homes, with lower latency and higher capacity, will ensure that home healthcare providers (e.g, visiting nurses) will receive the data they need in real time to enable high levels of care for the elderly, with the added benefit of patients remaining in their homes for as long as possible provided the data connection and network are rapid, broad, reliable and secure. The first 5G system for user sensing was recently reported, using CNNs to classify different activities (sitting, standing, walking) in four subjects [57].…”

“…The current efficiency is 70% which needs to be improved further. Ashleibta et al (2021b)used a 5G-enabled system with an operating frequency of 3.75 GHz to detect single and multisubject 16 movements which are shown in Figure 11. For this purpose, experiment data were recorded in the form of CSI amplitudes with 51 wireless sub-carriers analyzed and concatenated to record multi-subject motion.…”
