3D radiated power analysis of JET SPI discharges using the Emis3D forward modeling tool

B. Stein-Lubrano,
R. Sweeney,
D. Bonfiglio
et al.

Abstract: Precise values for radiated energy in tokamak disruption experiments are needed to validate disruption mitigation techniques for burning plasma tokamaks like ITER and SPARC. Control room analysis of radiated power (Prad) on JET assumes axisymmetry, since fitting 3D radiation structures with limited bolometry coverage is an underdetermined problem. In mitigated disruptions, radiation is toroidally asymmetric and 3D, due to fast-growing 3D MHD modes and localized impurity sources. To address this problem, Emis3D… Show more

“…It can be seen that core T e starts to drop from t ≈ 2 ms (line y) along with the penetration and assimilation of the first group of fragments. P rad starts to increase rapidly from t ≈ 6 ms (line z), based on either an inversion using the vertical bolometry and assuming axisymmetric radiation (solid blue trace in (b)) or a 3D tomographic reconstruction without assuming axisymmetric radiation (dashed red) using the Emis3D tool [45,46]. W th gradually drops mainly via conduction up to t ≈ 6 ms (line z), after which radiation plays an increasingly important role, as seen from panel (d).…”

“…There have been intensive studies, both experimentally [2][3][4][5][6] and numerically [7][8][9][10], on both the total radiated energy and the radiation power density within the plasma volume after SPIs. It has been found in general that an apparent toroidal asymmetry in the radiation power density exists for the single SPI cases, especially in the early injection phase.…”
