3D particle track reconstruction in a single layer cadmium-telluride hybrid active pixel detector

Abstract: In the past decades the search for neutrinoless double beta decay has driven many developments in all kind of detector technology. A new branch in this field are highly-pixelated semiconductor detectors-such as the CdTe-Timepix detectors. It comprises a cadmium-telluride sensor of 14 mm × 14 mm × 1 mm size with an ASIC which has 256 × 256 pixel of 55 µm pixel pitch and can be used to obtain either spectroscopic or timing information in every pixel. In regular operation it can provide a two dimensional projecti… Show more

“…The assembly, its readout (AdvaDAQ [3]) and the per-pixel energy calibration coefficients were provided by ADVA-CAM s.r.o. 2 In contrast to its predecessor Timepix [13], Timepix3 allows the measurement of the time of an interaction (time-of-arrival) and energy deposition (by the timeover-threshold) simultaneously in each individual pixel. It provides a data-driven readout scheme, i.e.…”

“…3.1, t time−walk can be corrected for. t offset was assumed to be the same constant delay in each pixel (the same assumption was made in [2]). Since the reconstruction method is based on measuring the time differences within the set of pixels forming a track, this offset is canceled out and does not play a role for the z-reconstruction.…”

“…Filipenko et al [10] presented a method for a 3D track reconstruction and achieved a z-resolution of 60 µm utilizing a Timepix chip attached to a 1 mm thick CdTe sensor. However, due to the limited time resolution of the Timepix chip, they had to use the sensor at very low bias, thus losing charge due to recombination.…”

“…This paper also discussed how the values of D, R, T and c affect the discrimination efficiency and proposed a possibility to discriminate single-electron and 0νββ events of different energies. Although due to current technical limitations conducting a practical experiment is difficult for the moment, recent progress on hybrid pixel detector technologies and reconstruction methods [16][22] [23]makes it promising to propose an experiment in the very near future, especially with Timepix3 when it is commercially available.…”
