Vicenin-2: a potential radiosensitizer of non-small cell lung cancer cells

Abstract: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a major form of cancer and is resistant to chemo- and radio-therapy. Vicenin-2 (VCN-2) is a flavonoid obtained from Ocimum sanctum L. and it has been reported to have radioprotective and anti-cancer properties. This study was conducted to check for the radiosensitizing potential of VCN-2 in the NSCLC cell line, NCI-H23. NCI-H23 cells were exposed to VCN-2 singularly, and to X-rays with and without prior VCN-2 treatment. Cytotoxicity assay, cell proliferation assay, caspase… Show more

“…3a, d, e, and h). This decrease in total Akt is carried out by caspase-3 mediated cleavage of Akt [61] which again corresponded with the observed increase in both caspase-3 activity level in our previous study (25) and its mRNA expression level in the VCN-2-treated group in combination with radiation ( Fig. 5f).…”

“…We conducted this study to check the effect of VCN‐2, a flavonoid of Ocimum sanctum L. , on the expression of Akt and modulation of the activity of its downstream targets that could result in favor of a pro‐apoptotic environment in the NSCLC cell line NCI‐H23, singularly and in combination with radiation. VCN‐2 has been shown to be a flavonoid with anticancer properties and potential radiosensitizing abilities . Thus, we carried out this study to further investigate the mechanism of action of VCN‐2 vis‐à‐vis its radiosensetizing potential.…”

“…[ 13 ] Oral treatment of Vicenin‐2 in prostate cancer rodent models inhibits blood vessel formation (angiogenesis), associated with tumor regression. [ 14 ] However, the anticancer potential of Vicenin‐2 against the 7,12‐dimethylbenz[ a ]anthracene (DMBA)‐provoked oral carcinogenesis has not been studied yet. Hence, in this study, we planned to explore the chemopreventive effect of Vicenin‐2 in DMBA‐induced buccal pouch carcinogenesis in hamsters via inhibition of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA).…”

“…Vicenin-2 (VCN-2) is a flavonoid extracted from the basil (Ocimum sanctum Linn.) that has been found to possess radioprotective and anticancer effects (Baruah et al, 2018). Basil (Ocimum sanctum Linn) is a widespread plant in Asia, particularly in Southeast Asia and South Asia, including Indonesia.…”
