Ethmoid tumor and oncogenic osteomalacia: Case report and review of the literature

Abstract: Twelve cases of mesenchymal tumor of the ethmoid sinus associated with oncogenic osteomalacia have been reported to date. FGF-23 assay and whole-body MRI with STIR sequence are useful for the diagnosis. A very favorable outcome is observed after surgical treatment in the majority of cases.

“…More than 70 cases in the head/neck have been reported in addition to the cases reported from our institute, and only 10 cases among them were refractory. (4,11,12,(14)(15)(16) Although this rate is higher than ours, it is plausible that TIO tumors in the head/neck have a favorable outcome. It does not make sense to compare the delicate differences between our cases and those reported in various institutes because other cases are so scattered.…”

“…Among each tumor location, head/neck tumors exerted the highest recovery rate, whereas spine tumors were most likely to be refractory. More than 70 cases in the head/neck have been reported in addition to the cases reported from our institute, and only 10 cases among them were refractory . Although this rate is higher than ours, it is plausible that TIO tumors in the head/neck have a favorable outcome.…”

“…4,5 Otolaryngologists and maxillofacial surgeons might not be familiar with PMTs because they are uncommon in the head and neck and rarely involve the naso-ethmoidal region. 6,7 At this level, PMTs often lack the distinctive (grungy) calcified matrix and multinucleated giant cells that characterize PMTs of soft tissues and bones and commonly present clusters of mature adipocytes and florid hemangiopericytoma-like vasculature associated with fascicles of myoid-appearing cells that may mimic other vascular and perivascular tumor. 5,8 To this regard, even though not specific, the immunoreactivity of the neoplastic cells for CD56 may be helpful because its expression in mesenchymal tumors is limited.…”
