Abstract: Intraoperative blood salvage systems functioned properly and the resultant blood product was superior in terms of red blood cell species. The HemoSep group had significantly better platelet and leukocyte concentrations and fibrinogen content.

“…Thus, our data indicate that contact of blood with cotton during cardiac surgery with heart lung machine provokes a material‐induced inflammatory activation. Diverse autotransfusion systems on the market remove dead or activated cells and proteins to a certain extent, but not completely so that an activation cascade could potentially be triggered systemically culminating in SIRS and its consequences . When the heart lung machine is connected or large vessels are injured, the blood volume exiting the body is far too large to be first washed in a cell saver.…”

“…This “washing” removes plasma components such as complement or coagulation factors and cell fragments. This way, only concentrated red blood cells will be reperfused to the patient bearing no risk of activation at all …”

“…Boyle et al 12 compared coagulation parameters in people undergoing cardiac bypass surgery and found no significant differences between a centrifuge-based device and Hemosep; however, the authors concluded the ultrafiltration device may cause less activation of coagulation and fibrinolysis. Gunaydin et al 15 also compared Hemosep with a specific centrifuge-based device. Both devices produced an adequate concentration of haemoglobin and WBC compared with baseline.…”

“…For this length of processing time, its use could be limited in emergency situations. Quicker concentration bags (20 minutes) have been studied,15 making them potentially more suitable for emergency situations. Hemosep set-up for surgeries where blood loss is expected to be greater than 10 per cent may not be feasible in veterinary medicine for financial reasons.…”

“…Two devices are most commonly used for IBSA in surgery, Cell Saver™ and HemoSep™. However, so far, only a few studies have compared their efficiency and costs[29].…”
