The ecology of anemia: Anemia prevalence and correlated factors in adult indigenous women in Argentina

Abstract: Iron deficiency represents a serious health concern for women, particularly pregnant ones. Our results suggest that both past and current nutritional ecology variables may be associated with the risk of anemia. These findings inform public health interventions, since reproductive history may be more difficult to modify than current diet.

“…Poverty in India is a major barrier to positive health outcomes for both men and women, but poverty tends to yield a higher burden on women and girls' health due to malnutrition and unsafe fuels. The prevalence was found to be higher than some previous studies (24) . According to the World Health Organization, 54.8 % of women around 15-49 years and 50.4% of children under 5 years of age were reported to be anaemic in Tamil Nadu by a National Family Health Survey.…”

“…Diets are not calorically restricted, but are high in refined carbohydrates and fat, and may be protein or micronutrient limited -fried dough is a main staple (Valeggia et al, 2010;Lanza and Valeggia, 2014). In recent surveys, the prevalence of adult obesity and metabolic syndrome were 45% and 38% (Lagranja et al, 2014), while over half of adult women were borderline anemic to anemic (Goetz and Valeggia, 2017). There is no trash disposal service or infrastructure for waste water removal.…”

“…Some covariates such as anemia and physical activity might play a role in the association between diet and depressive symptoms. In fact, anemia is associated with both diet and depression [16][17][18]. In a study on French individuals, depressed participants were significantly more likely to have anemia compared to non-depressed participants, even after adjustment for sociodemographic and health-related variables.…”
