Abstract: Natural products have always been exploited to promote health and served as a valuable source for the discovery of new drugs. In this review, the great potential of natural compounds and medicinal plants for the treatment or prevention of cardiovascular and metabolic disorders, global health problems with rising prevalence, is addressed. Special emphasis is laid on natural products for which efficacy and safety have already been proven and which are in clinical trials, as well as on plants used in traditional … Show more

“…Accordingly, Nrf2 activation contributes to several beneficial bioactivities of natural products. In this sense, the benefits o f fruit consumption may be due to the interactions of different bioactive compounds (flavonoids, o ther p olyphenols, a nd P hytoPs, among others), since they could activate the Nrf2 pathway and increase expression of the antioxidant response (Waltenberger, Mocan, Šmejkal, Heiss, & Atanasov, 2016). In relation to cocoa or its derivatives, the capacity of this food has been hypothesized to activate the Nrf2 factor, but it is associated with flavan-3-ol(-) -epicatechin (Shah et al, 2010).…”

“…Considering that many medicinal plants and natural products are considered by the public as a safe and cost-effective alternative to synthetic drugs [47], natural product libraries may be a valuable source of preventive and therapeutic agents for muscle atrophy. Flavonoids, which exist ubiquitously in vegetables, fruits, teas, and medicinal plants, possess a wide range of health benefits [48].…”

“…However, only a few molecular targets or pathways are well-established to mediate the beneficial effects of natural compounds in the context of cardiovascular and metabolic disorders. Selected examples include the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), cyclooxygenase (COX)-1 and -2, the dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4), eNOS, the transcription factors NF-κB, nuclear factorerythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), and PPAR, the PTP1B, and 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) [143,144]. For a variety of medicinal plants used in many traditional medicines, the mechanisms of action have not yet been elucidated.…”
