25.2: Repeatedly Foldable Book‐Type AMOLED Display

Abstract: In this study, a 5.9-inch foldable Book-Type AMOLED display was developed. A folding test was performed repeatedly. The display survived the folding test (100,000 folds) with a curvature radius of 2 mm.

“…Foldable displays, which are size-adjustable, offer a promising solution to the portability-practicality trade-off. 1,2 Various displaying modes, such as electronic paper, liquid crystal, and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), have been proposed for foldable displays. [3][4][5] The mobile device displays must also satisfy other specifications such as highresolution, low-power consumption, light weight, thinness, durability, and flexible design.…”

“…Commercial barrier vendors typically provide multilayer organic-inorganic structures that fail when flexing, or cannot be bent to tight bending radii (below 10 mm). Silicon nitride-based barrier films have been used with success, allowing a display demonstrator with sufficiently wide bezel seal area to be bent over 100 000 repeats to a bending radius of 2 mm without failure 7 . Some of these films are difficult to implement on native polymer substrates, and investigations to create molecularly impermeable thin film barriers have been carried out with varying results [8][9][10][11][12] .…”

“…We have previously fabricated flexible OLED displays using a combination of white OLEDs and color filters . We also have developed a foldable OLED display folded in three like a folding screen and a display folded in two like a book . By providing the foldable OLED display with a touch sensor, we develop an emerging value‐added touch panel with a wide application range.…”
