25.1: Tri‐Fold Flexible AMOLED with High Barrier Passivation Layers

Abstract: A folding screen type OLED display was developed (Fig. 1) to demonstrate the application of a flexible display. The display surface can be bent with a curvature radius of 4 mm. To protect an OLED against moisture, inorganic passivation layers are provided on the upper and lower sides of the flexible display. Using our transfer technology, dense passivation layers can be obtained. The measured water vapor transmission rate of the layer is 7 10 6 g/m 2 day or less, which improves OLED reliability.

“…Given the recent progresses achieved in the large-area integration of flexible devices, a relevant part of the review has focused on circuits, as well as on systems based on metal oxide semiconductor TFTs. Examples of novel large-area flexible electronic systems include flexible, textile-integrated, rollable and/or foldable optical displays, 39,40,127,158,175,176,203,214,310,316,[346][347][348][349][350][351][352] flexible and/or stretchable systems for temperature, 343 pH, 166,185 and x-ray sensing, 322,355,356 wireless power transmission, 81,315 as well as non-volatile storage and NFC transmission of data. 136,167,204,315 Despite the advances that flexible metal oxide semiconductor TFTs have witnessed in the last decade, there are still some bottlenecks that prevent the commercialization of this technology in new areas of application beyond optical displays.…”

“…Large displays are preferred for mobile devices; however, small displays are more portable. Foldable displays, which are size‐adjustable, offer a promising solution to the portability–practicality trade‐off . Various displaying modes, such as electronic paper, liquid crystal, and organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs), have been proposed for foldable displays .…”

“…Unlike the previous report which demonstrated multi-foldable display with AMOLED [3], plastic substrates are adopted on both sides in this work. Color Filter (CF) part is fabricated using a transparent plastic substrate and AMOLED part is fabricated on the high-temperature-resistance plastic substrate.…”
