2-(Pyridin-2-yl)-1,3-oxathiane

Abstract: The title compound, C9H11NOS, exhibits a unique structural motif, with free rotation of the aliphatic oxathiane ring about the C—C bond connecting this moiety to the aromatic pyridine ring. The structure elucidation was undertaken due to its potential as a bidentate ligand for organometallic complexes. The oxathiane ring adopts the expected chair conformation, with the S atom in proximity to the N atom on the pyridine ring. The corresponding S—C—C—N torsion angle is 69.07 (14)°. In the crystal, molecules aggr… Show more

“…Ruthenium-centered organometallic complexes, which are molecules containing coordination bonds between metal atoms and organic ligands, would be an intriguing choice because of high temperature stability and fast photoisomerization, on the order of seconds to minutes. 20,21 Recently, the bidentate ligand 2 -(Pyridin-2-yl)-1,3oxathiane 22 and the ruthenium organometallic complex [Ru(bpy) 2 (pox)]Cl 2 based on this ligand were synthesized, and photo-physical studies were conducted on this material. Photoisomerization of a methanol suspension of [Ru(bpy) 2 (pox)]Cl 2 was studied using a UV-VIS spectrometer 23 and is described below, with the data shown in the supplementary material.…”

“…For this study, the bidentate ligand 2-(2-pyridyl)-1,3oxathiane 22 and the ruthenium-centered organometallic complex, ruthenium bis-4,4 0 -di(thiomethyl)-2,2 0 -bipyridine, mono-2 -(2-pyridyl)-1,3-oxathiane ([Ru{(HS-CH 2 ) 2 -bpy} 2 {pox}](PF 6 ) 2 ) based on this bidentate ligand have been synthesized for the purpose of covalently tethering the complex to gold surfaces and forming a self assembled monolayer. The [Ru{(HS-CH 2 ) 2 -bpy} 2 {pox}](PF 6 ) 2 complex is a sulfur modification of the compound discussed in the previous paragraph.…”
