2.5 Gbit/s transmission over 200 m PPMA graded index polymer optical fiber using a 645 nm narrow spectrum laser and a silicon APD

Abstract: We report on a 2.5 Gbit/s transmission experiment at 645 nm wavelength using a PMMA–GI–POF with a core diameter of 500 μm reaching a record distance of 200 m. The result is obtained owing to the use of a very sensitive silicon APD receiver, a laser source with a narrow spectral width, a fiber with improved performance, and low‐loss optical interconnection between the components. ©1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
