Abstract: OBJECTIVE:Sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus is common in young men and may recur over time after surgery. We investigated whether a factor exists that can aid in the determination of the preferred technique between the early Limberg flap and Karydakis flap techniques for treating recurrent pilonidal sinus.MATERIALS AND METHODS:This prospective and randomized study enrolled 71 patients with recurrent pilonidal sinus in whom the Limberg flap or Karydakis flap techniques were applied for reconstruction after excisio… Show more

“…According to the following formula from a study by Bali et al [23], and consider a drop-out rate of 23% a sample size of 26 subjects per group provided approximately a power of 0.9 for comparing the 2 treatment groups; Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics ver. 21.0 (IBM Co., Armonk, NY, USA).…”

“…Wound infections were treated by medical therapy and dressing applications. Wound infection rates were found similar in several studies after various flap procedures for postoperative recurrent pilonidal sinus treatment [15,18].…”

“…Operative procedures such as Limberg flap, Karydakis flap, fasiocutaneous V-Y advancement flap reconstruction and Cleft lift procedure are used in recurrent and complicated disease. High rates of success was obtained for the treatment of recurrent disease with these surgical procedures [12][13][14][15]. Besides this, several minimally invasive methods are also available such as laser hair removal and crystallized phenol application and these methods can be applied in postoperative recurrence of pilonidal disease [10,16].…”

“…The reconstruction of defects in the intergluteal region following pilonidal sinus excision is challenging due to its anatomical location, close proximity to the anus, and being a high‐tension area prone to wound‐healing problems. Excision and primary closure is known to carry a higher risk of recurrence and subsequent complications compared with using nearby local healthy tissue, such as a flap, to reconstruct the defect . Within the various flap reconstructive options previously described in available literature, each technique presents varying reported rates of complications, such as haematoma, wound infection, dehiscence, flap necrosis, and seroma.…”

Therefore, extra due diligence should be given to patient selection and flap choice when deciding the reconstruction of a defect.…”
