Abstract: Physical cardiovascular examination, particularly cardiac auscultation, is one of the most difficult clinical skills for students during their medical training. Studies suggest that the use of technologies such as digital stethoscope increase the accuracy of clinical examination, however, its impact on the teaching of cardiac auscultation for undergraduate students of medicine is not known. The objective is to demonstrate the usefulness of the digital stethoscope compared to traditional methods as a tool in th… Show more

“…In another study, medical students who received short-term training with an electronic stethoscope showed greater improvement from pretest to post-test in cardiac auscultation 16. In our study, however, we chose to study pulmonary rather than cardiac auscultation.…”

“…We encourage the use of carefully designed randomized controlled trials (see 31 ) as have been conducted in other areas of medical education. In cardiology, for instance, there are several randomized controlled studies that assess medical students' learning of cardiac auscultation, [32][33][34] electrocardiogram interpretation, [35][36][37] and cardiac ultrasound exams. 38,39 Similarly, in pulmonary medicine and critical care, randomized controlled trials exist to evaluate the value of ultrasound on learning the clinical exam, 40 the effectiveness of counseling techniques on smoking cessation, 41,42 and the impact of simulation-based training on managing dyspnea 43 and septic shock.…”

“…It features external noise filtering and the ability to amplify sound. There is also the availability of visual display allowing the localisation of sounds heard in the cardiac cycle [1,15,16]. This can allow the development of heart sound databases for continued reference and review.…”
